Sarah Palin hymn and who’s yer dadd..(I mean brother and sister)and more!

Ok…we as Christians (read evangelical or fundamental Christians) continue to do considerable damage to the Gospel of Christ. Whether it be our “Things go better with Christ”  Coca Cola  logo tea shirt ripoff,  Fred Phelps and his band of crazy “God hates the world and so do we” protestors, or even Benny Hinn charging admission to his “miracle” crusades in poverty-stricken African countries with the false promises of healing and wealth, we just don’t seem to get it. But we don’t get it. We continue to out do each other with stupidity and ignorance. And, of course one my favorite drums to beat is how mixing politics and Christianity is toxic because after all is said and done the Gospel becomes something perverted from its orginal intent. Case in point the video above exalting the Tea Party and Sarah Palin. Sung in a church and to the tune of  The Battle Hymn of the Republic. What a sinful perversion of the message of Christ.

Next up… Governor Robert Bentley and his not well thought though comment that, while he said he spoke as a private citizen, had repercussions throughout the country.  He said,  ”Now I will have to say that, if we don’t have the same daddy, we’re not brothers and sisters. So anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I’m telling you, you’re not my brother and you’re not my sister, and I want to be your brother.”

As a public servant, his responsibility is to all of those living in Alabama. And while his comment was not meant to offend, it did offend. Yes, I agree that there is a special relationship that is suppose to exist between those who claim the name of Jesus as their Savior.  But all people are special creations of God with talent, abilities and gifts given to them by God. Therefore they should not be marginalized or made to feel like they are marginalized. And on top of that Jesus Himself called us as believers to love our neighbors as we love ourselves, to love our enemies, to do good to all people. The Governor should have proclaimed that message and sought to build bridges of understanding rather than burning them.

Two examples to answer the question “why do so many Americans run from the Gospel?” Unfortunately, we are not proclaiming to true Gospel of love, forgiveness and grace found in Jesus.

  1. I remember when an elementary school had practiced a song for the president when he was visiting and changed a word to Obama. So many right wing conservatives were up in arms over a song featuring Obama. They cried, “they are brainwashing our kids.” And it wasn’t a hymn to God they changed.
When we can change hymns in support of a person, when we can religious-ize politics, we are close to blasphemy in my opinion.

  2. I agree, that on the whole — people out there aren’t showing love, grace, and forgiveness. While yeah, the world is fallen and sinful .. we all sin and fall short of the Glory of God, we should try to do the best we can. We should obey the Bible, be at peace with people around us to the best of our ability (isnt that a Bible verse?). I think that yeah, there’s a good many ..true Christians that really do try to show love, grace, and forgiveness, but… I guess we have to weed out through the bad apples to get to the good apples 🙂
